What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

Posted on: March 30, 2008 4:50 am

About two or so weeks a go I was awarded my 1K. But, for the last four or five days I haven't posted but I have sent several private messages to a friend. I logged on to my lap top yesterday and low and behold...... my 1K has been literally ripped off. I say this because I didn't do anything to deserve losing it and I'll make my point about this now...

I was reading through the threads on the Auto boards and noticed that one oh my favorites Gixxer had created a thread about loosing his 1K. Now explain this... I have people on my connections that are 1k that have literally not been active for at least a month and a half and they still have their 1K. They have not posted, played any games and some of them are ranked even higher under their value than some of the people that are on here every day with the same rating! I have to believe in my case CBS has used this as some sort of punishment in their eyes for me putting them down here lately. What do I have to say about that? If the shoe fits wear it!!

I know there are better minds than mine out there so if anyone can come up with a solution to the way CBS treats members so different, please by all means ...let the Auto Boards know and any one else about the dictatorship of CBS.

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

Wow, look at all the comments about the top 1k badge thinger dinger. The one that stuck out for me was the number of people on these boards. 300,000 posters. So the top 1k make up 0.33%, the top 100 0.033%, and those lucky enough to be in the top 10 0.003%. So 99.67% of the posters here do not have that top 1k badge. Looking at those numbers, it is no surprise that people don't have it, what is a surprise is the number of people on the Auto Boards that do have it. I took a look at my profile the other day, and since the inception of the 5 star thing, my value ranking has dropped like a stone. Are there flaws in the current system? Sure, were there flaws in the previous system? Yes. If they change it again, will there be flaws in the system? Yes. The fact is, no system is perfect.

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

"The person you're seeing may have a lot history in fantasy sports...which count for a big portion of the reputation."

Ahh .. that explains why I'll never get ovet that hump ... I can't play the Fanatsy Games from work, and at home don't have time. Thanks for the explanation.

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

i agree there are flaws but how can the computer rate the posts so that that 4 month S thing doesnt occur? Will CBS just tell everyone not to rate on the Vote Offs?  Yeah there are flaws but i think its one of the best systems out there. granted i havent seen much other systems, but I think this one is pretty darn good.  If I made this system i would have no problem whatsoever to come out and say i made it.  I bet the guy isn't answering because there is no answer.  Everything has flaws.  Our U.S. government has flaws and its the best out there.  They still have voting problems because people don't know what they're talking about and just vote to say they did not knowing who they really like for president.  That is similar to this "Vote off" problem in the sense that people arent rating each other by the content they are rating them by something that neglects how the system is supposed to work.  I would like to see SOME way that "bad posters" can get downgraded because otherwise the only way one can lose reputation is by not participating.

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

Coleridge... Thank you very much for finally answering this question. I'm not sure it's fair that we need to post in message boards that are considered high traffic in order to get or keep our ratings up. I don't think that's fair and should some how be dealt with and corrected in some fashion by CBS. But, I do understand though.

Thank you to the other CBS spokes people who have helped clear this matter up also. I know I was speaking for a lot of bewildered people.

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

I am fairly new to this these boards and I, apparently, along with many people have been very confused by the rating system.  I have read, over time, any peoples theorys of the system.  This  has been the best explaination of the system.  I appreciate all of the questions, theorys and also the imput from the CBS.

At least I know now not to rate the trolls which are such a pain and always manage to rile everyone.  I finally decided that the one that I have found to be the worst MrSooner to you was just trying to mess with everyones mind and I was just going to ignore him.  I suspect now that the reason to get everyone "going" was because he knew that he would get rating out of it and therefor boosting his rating.  Ignoring him apparently  is the best thing to do.  Apparently people like him don't have a life and get some jollies out of harrassing people.

Again, thanks for all of the info.

Thanks for the further elucidation Coleridge.  That would help explain why posting on the golf message board would not help our value as much as posting on the baseball or football one where there are many more users posting and rating posts.

For me, prior to reading this blog, the biggest question was whether or not it negatively affects someone when you give them less than 5 stars.  I didn't think it hurt them but couldn't prove it to others.

I actually had one person private message me and ask me not to rate their posts anymore because I had given them a 4.  I tried to explain to them that I hadn't hurt them at all and that any rating is better than none, but I couldn't find any proof of that on the site to show them.

Of course, I do think that the majority of people will always see less than a 5 as a negative, despite this blog, since the formula is obviously very involved and complicated to understand.

What's Up With CBS Taking Ratings Away?!

gordon24, a 1k isn't permanent. It just means that at that moment the user is at the top 1k of the community. If you don't post for a few days and another users' ratings go above yours, then you drop and they go up, giving them the 1k you previously had.

Participation is determined on a post per x amount of time basis. So a user that has only been around 2 months, but posts more in 2 months than you do in 2 months will pass you in participation. It doesn't look at an overall number, but at a percentage of participation over a given time. 20 posts in 1 day trump 500 posts in 500 days, for example, when it comes to Participation - 20 to 1 vs 1 to 1.

Some more clarification on the way ratings work can be found .
